Bountiful Baskets: Bang For Your Buck?

I picked up my order of Bountiful Baskets today and got a ton of great stuff! I went to Wal-Mart right after to do some price comparisons to see if I really am saving money getting my fruits and veggies this way. The conventional baskets are $15.00 and then there is a $1.50 charge for shipping and stuff, so the total is $16.50 for a wide assortment of vegetables and fruits. Here’s the breakdown of the costs:

Strawberries: $1.98

3.5 lbs Bananas: $1.68 ($0.48/lb)

3 Mangos: $3.54 ($1.18 ea.)

5 lemons: $1.35 ($0.27 ea.)

Bok Choy: $0.98

Lettuce: $0.98

4 Bell Peppers: $2.32 ($0.58 ea.)

1 lb Asparagus: $3.48/lb

Garlic bulb: $3.18

2 Radish bunches: $1.66 ($0.83 ea.)

Celery stalk: $1.44

Shopping for the same fruits and veggies at Wal-Mart would have cost me $23.45 before taxes. So I ended up with a savings of $6.95. It’s not a huge number, but I love the variety I get since a lot of it is stuff I wouldn’t normally touch! The radishes can be used in salads, which I did tonight for supper and it was delicious. I’m still not too sure what to do with the bok choy, but I’m curious to see how I’ll end up using it. I put half the celery in a roast I have going in the crock pot right now. Anyway, I’ll keep doing price comps after each basket I get to see if I consistently end up with savings. I’ll keep you posted!
